Mixing of wastes

Please be advised that in accordance to paragraph «ж» of the article 17 of the law of Ukraine «On waste», the obligations of business entity are preventing of waste mixing if it is not prescribed by current technology and complicates the waste management or it is not proved that such action meets the requirements for increasing environmental safety and due to the paragraph 6 of the article 33 of this law «Prohibited the waste mixing or disposal for disposal of which there is a relevant technology in Ukraine».

It worth to note that an identification of waste goes as a result of analysis of chemical structure and physical status of waste with the further classification due to the State classificatory of waste SC 005-96.

In accordance to the last information of State service of Ukraine for food safety and consumer protection (former SES) and experience of the specialists of MCL, LLC:

  • Chemical structure of solid household waste (Code due to SC 005-96: 3.1.01 Municipal (local) mixed waste including rubbish) is:

Substance (component) Chemical formula Weight fraction, %
Cellulose (paper) [C6H7O2(OH)3]n 40
Polyethylene [-CH2-CH2-]n 20
Glass (silicon oxide) Na2O·CaO·6SiO2 20
Organic compounds protein, lipids, nucleic acids 10
Water H2O 10
  • Chemical structure of food waste (Code due to SC 005-96: 3.1.05 Other nonconforming food products)

Substance (component) Chemical formula Weight fraction, %
Protein СН2 – СООН СН3 – СН – СООН 60
Nucleic acids C29H49N9O22P3 30
Lipids C15H31COOH 10

It is interesting to note that solid household waste (SHW) contains of 10% of organic compounds, but solid household waste is not waste of food residues. The food waste is more hazardous when used with recycling, but conditionally useful after proper disposal.

The hazard of food waste is increased in case of high humidity (approximately 80%), because they suddenly rot and became the source of growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Rotten products – are the food for all finds of disease carrier (rodents, cockroaches, fly). In liquid discharge there is a high concentration of organic acids that spread the bad smell and pollutant substances: drinking alcohol, acetaldehyde, ammonia, acetic acid.

The food residues are required the separate collection and disposal in special refuse pits for producing fertilizer materials, biofuel and methane.

The technology of solid household waste disposal in Ukraine means their allocation at specialized landfills of SHW, recycling on secondary raw materials or incineration. However, in Kyiv more than 90% of SHW are allocated at landfill №5 of JSC «Kyivspetstrans». This landfill is aimed absolutely for allocation of SHW.

That`s why it is necessary to implement the separate food waste collection from SHW at enterprise. In addition, the allocation of noticed type of waste is extremely hazardous for environment.
